An AI tool for generating images
Midjourney is a free tool and service that can be used to generate images using AI (artificial intelligence). It is available as both a web service and a bot. The app works by taking in simple text prompts and using trained AI models to produce an image based on the text.
The web service version of Midjourney is available through the developer's website and works similarly to other AI content creation tools like DALL·E. However, the bot is designed to work with the popular Discord messaging platform, allowing images to be generated in chat.
Simple image generation from text prompts
Like many other image generation AIs, Midjourney works by taking in a simple text prompt and returning an image based on that prompt. Where Midjourney differs from some examples is that, by default, it returns four images in one. The user can then choose to regenerate any of those four images on their own if they wish.
Variations and upscaling
Midjourney provides the user with the ability to easily upscale any of the four generated images to a single larger image. It is also possible to regenerate the individual images if the user is not happy with the results. Of course, they can also just run the whole process again to get four new images.
An interesting and useful tool
Midjourney is a particularly accessible and free example of AI image generation. Like all AI image generators, it can be difficult to get a specific desired image, and those images often contain strange artifacts as a result of the AI process, but it can be an interesting tool to play with.
Midjourney V5
The new version includes a wider stylistic range, better quality images, more detailed images with correct details, improved performance, and the ability to weigh image prompts versus text prompts. Users can activate the fifth version by typing "/settings" in Discord and choosing MJ 5, or by adding "--v 5" at the command prompt when generating an image.
